PEOPLE OFTEN GIVE CREDIT TO THEIR PARENTS,RELATIVES, FRIENDS
WHEN THEY ACHIEVE GREAT THINGS IN LIFE. I REMEMBER PROF RAM MOHAN TELLING ME'
IT IS YOU WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU ARE TODAY. ALL OTHERS WILL CAUSE A
POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE IMPACT WHICH GET CANCELLED OUT'.
SO WHAT YOU DO YOU THINK WHEN YOU ARE HAPPY OR SAD , YOU PROBABLY GIVE CREDIT OR PASS THE BLAME TO SOME EVENT OR PERSON BECAUSE IT IS A HUMAN TENDENCY TO CREATE MEANING OUT OF EVERYTHING.HERE IS MY OPINION ON THIS ISSUE:
SO WHAT YOU DO YOU THINK WHEN YOU ARE HAPPY OR SAD , YOU PROBABLY GIVE CREDIT OR PASS THE BLAME TO SOME EVENT OR PERSON BECAUSE IT IS A HUMAN TENDENCY TO CREATE MEANING OUT OF EVERYTHING.HERE IS MY OPINION ON THIS ISSUE:
WHETHER YOU HAVE ACHIEVED SUCCESS OR HAVE FAILED MISERABLY
WHETHER YOU ARE HAPPY OR SAD
OR FEELING INFERIOR OR SUPERIOR
OR FEELING DISILLUSIONED,DISENCHANTED OR DEPRESSED
OR YOU ARE FEELING STRONG OR WEAK
IT IS YOU WHO IS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU ARE
EITHER CONSCIOUSLY OR UNCONSCIOUSLY,
IT IS YOU WHO HAS TAKEN THE DECISIONS WHICH HAVE CAUSED HAPPINESS OR SORROW
YOUR ACTIONS AND DECISIONS ALONE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT YOU ARE TODAY
OFCOURSE, IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO REALIZE AND MORE IMPORTANTLY ACCEPT THIS FACT
YOU MAY NOT REALIZE IT WHEN YOU ARE A CHILD, BUT YOU UNKNOWINGLY ACCEPTED WHATEVER IS TAUGHT AND GIVEN TO YOU AND HAVE TAKEN DECISIONS
YOU HAVE GIVEN THE POWER TO SITUATIONS TO TAKE CONTROL OF
YOUR EMOTIONS
THERE IS SOMETHING CALLED THE STIMULUS RESPONSE GAP. VARIOUS STIMULII ARE THROWN UNTO YOU, BUT REMEMBER, YOU HAVE THE CHOICE OF FIGHTING THE SITUATION OR GIVING UP. YOU CAN JUST PAUSE AND CONSCIOUSLY MAKE A CHOICE ABOUT HOW TO RESPOND TO THE STIMULUS
TAKE THE EXAMPLE OF A MOTHER AND A SON. IT OFTEN HAPPENS
THAT ONE'S WEAKNESS EMPOWERS THE OTHER. FOR EXAMPLE, A MOTHER MIGHT MOLLYCODDLE THE SON. THE SON MIGHT DEPEND ON THIS
WEAKNESS AND MAY EMPOWER THIS WEAKNESS TO AFFECT HIM. IT IS THE SON WHO HAS
ALLOWED THE STIMULUS (OF THE MOTHER'S PAMPERING) TO IMPACT HIM. THE SON HAS NOT
REALIZED THAT HE HAS THE POWER TO ACT ON THE STIMULI,TO IDENTIFY THAT IT IS
JUST A MOTHERS TENDENCY( WEAKNESS) AND THAT HE HAS TO BE INDEPENDENT AND FACE
LIFE AS IT IS WITHOUT PROTECTION.THIS POWER TO ACT ON THE STIMULUS IS ABSENT IN
ANIMALS
AS LONG AS THE SON DOES NOT ACCEPT THIS FACT, HE HAS NO
RIGHT TO CLAIM OTHERWISE.
VICTOR FRANKL IS A CLASSIC EXAMPLE TO ILLUSTRATE HOW TO
EFFECTIVELY USE THE STIMULUS RESPONSE GAP TO RISE IN LIFE. FRANKL WAS SUBJECTED
TO ABSOLUTE,ABJECT, MISERABLE TORCHER IN THE DEATH CAMPS IN AUSTRIA. HE HAS
ALMOST GIVEN UP, BUT SUDDENLY HE WAS ENLIGHTENED. HE REALIZED THAT JUST BECAUSE
HE WAS TORCHERED, DOES NOT MEAN THAT HE HAS TO FEEL WEAK OR DEPRESSED OR
INFERIOR. HE REALIZED THAT HE COULD STILL DECIDE TO ACT UPON THE STIMULUS AND
FIGHT. HE ALSO REALIZED THAT TRUE STRENGTH COMES FROM WITHIN AND IT IS A
CHOICE. THIS VERY THOUGHT HAS CHANGED HIS LIFE. HE BECAME IMPERMEABLE TO
TORCHER AND FOUGHT AGAINST THEM (THE NAZIS) AND SAVED MANY LIVES. THIS WAS
POSSIBLE ONLY BECAUSE HE REALIZED THAT HE HAS THE CHOICE TO FIGHT
SAME IS THE CASE WITH MAHATMA GANDHI WHO SUCCESSFULLY
LAUNCHED THE NON-VIOLENCE MOVEMENT. GANDHI MADE A CHOICE TO BE STRONG AND FIGHT
AGAINST THE BRITISHERS.
SO,NEXT TIME, WHENEVER YOU FACE A CONFLICT, BEFORE YOU BLAME
THE SITUATION OR PEOPLE , TRY TO ACCEPT THE FACT THAT YOU ARE THE MAKER OF YOUR
OWN DESTINY. BLAMING SOMEONE IS JUST A WEAKNESS TO SATISFY YOUR EGO AND IT
WOULD BECOME AN ADDICTION. JUST PAUSE FOR A MOMENT AND REALIZE THAT YOU ARE
RESPONSIBLE FOR THE SITUATION. UNTIL YOU DO THIS, YOU WILL NOT OBTAIN ENOUGH
STRENGTH TO FIGHT IT PERMANENTLY. YOU MAT GET ALONG SOMEHOW, LIKE JUST TREATING
A WOUND WITH A BAND-AID, BUT THE MAIN ISSUE WHICH LIES BENEATH WILL REMAIN THE
SAME. I.E., THE FACT THAT YOU ARE UNABLE TO ACCEPT THE REASON FOR THE SITUATION
(THAT IS YOU YOURSELF)
AS SAID BY SHAKESPEARE' WITH THOUSANDS OF INSECTS BITING THE
LEAVES THE TREE. THERE ARE JUST A FEW OF
THEM ATTACKING THE ROOT OF THE TREE'. HENCE, ATTACK THE ROOT..IN OTHER WORDS,
REALIZE THAT YOUR ACTIONS AND DECISIONS ONLY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR PRESENT
STATE OF LIFE. ACCEPT THAT AND START BEING PROACTIVE. REMEMBER, UNTIL YOU
WHOLE-HEARTEDLY REALIZE THAT YOU THE ARE THE PROGRAMMER OF YOUR DESTINY, YOU
CANNOT BE PROACTIVE
BEING PROACTIVE IS THE FIRST STEP TO MAKE YOU AN EFFECTIVE
PERSON.ONE MAY ARGUE THAT THERE ARE MANY SITUATIONS WHICH ARE NOT UNDER YOUR
CONTROL. FOR EXAMPLE, YOUR PARENTS, RELATIVES AND THE SOCIETY, ENVIRONMENT, THE
UNIVERSE ETC. I WOULD LIKE TO CLARIFY THAT THERE ARE ALWAYS THINGS WHICH WE
CANNOT CONTROL. WE HAVE TO LIVE WITH THESE SITUATIONS, BECAUSE THESE ARE OUT OF
OUR CIRCLE OF INFLUENCE. BEING PROACTIVE ALSO MEANS UNDERSTANDING THIS ABOVE
STATED FACT
THE ADVANTAGE OF BEING PROACTIVE IS AS FOLLOWS"ALL SAID
AND DONE, YOU HAVE GIVEN YOUR LEVEL BEST TO FACE THE CHALLENGE OR
CONFLICT".THIS STATEMENT IS REALLY IMPORTANT BECAUSE AT THE END OF THE
DAY, WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY OR SAD ARE YOUR ATTEMPTS TO ACHIEVE A GOAL. WHEN YOU
WORK CONSCIENTIOUSLY FOR AN EXAM AND FAIL, YOU WOULDN'T REALLY FEEL SAD ,
BECAUSE YOU HAVE TRIED YOUR BEST.YOU WILL AT LEAST HAVE THE SATISFACTION OF
HAVING GIVEN YOUR FULL EFFORTS.
HENCE PUT YOUR EFFORTS CONSCIOUSLY, BE PROACTIVE AND STOP
BLAMING THE OUTSIDE WORLD FOR WHATEVER HAPPENS TO YOU.A JOURNEY OF A THOUSAND
MILES BEGINS WITH A SINGLE STEP. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO OVERCOME OUR
PERCEPTIONS AND CREATE A NEW ONE, BUT REMEMBER ONCE YOU TRULY EXPERIENCE 'HOW
IT FEELS TO BE PROACTIVE', IT LIBERATES YOU AND GIVES YOU STRENGTH.THIS VERY
STRENGTH GIVES POWER TO CONTINUE BEING PROACTIVE.
OF COURSE IT MIGHT TAKE TIME AND MIGHT BE CHALLENGING BUT YOU SUDDENLY FIND A NEW STRENGTH IN YOU WHICH CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
